A sausage roll is a popular pastry snack that is common
in countries in the European Union. It is always available in retail outlets
and in eateries all over the world.
When the word sausage roll is heard for the first time in Nigeria, what
comes to mind is the popular Gala snack that is sold in virtually
all areas in Nigeria.
Sausage Roll Composition
The basic composition of a sausage roll is generally a sheet or sheets of puff pastry formed into tubes around sausage meat and glazed with egg or milk before being baked.They can be served either hot or cold. It usually has two different sections of ingredients; the first one is for the filling while the second section is for the dough. I will be showing you how you can easily make sausage roll in the comfort of your home so grab a seat and follow me down the steps...
Ingredients
for the Filling
- 1 tablespoon chopped parsley
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 medium carrot (grated)
1 handful breadcrumbs - 1 onion (chopped)
- 1 pack of sausages (minced)
- 1 tablespoon ground pepper
- 2 eggs
Ingredients for the Dough
- 1 cup margarine (NOT butter)
- 1 Tablespoon sugar
- 1 Teaspoon salt
- 2 Teaspoons baking powder
- 3 cups all purpose flour
- 6 Tablespoons cold water
Materials Needed
- Oven or Frying pan
- Knife
- Tray
- Flat table
- 2 bowls
Method of Preparation
- Pre heat oven to about 220degree celcius (optional if you are frying)
- Take a bowl and sieve flour and baking powder inside
- Add salt to the mixture
- Add sugar and margarine and mix well
- Add little water and mix together very well till it forms dough
- Cover with a nylon and keep in refrigerator for about 25 minutes
- Place your sausage in a blender and mince
8. Get another bowl and pour the blended sausage inside
9. Add onion, carrot, egg, parsley and pepper in a large bowl
10. Mix until well combined
11. Cut pastry sheets in half
12. Shape one-quarter of the mince mixture into a sausage and place along 1 long edge of pastry
13. Roll up pastry to enclose mince mixture
14. Cut roll into 4 with a knife depending on the size you want
15. Place, seam side down on prepared tray
16. Repeat with remaining mince mixture and pastry
17. Brush sausage roll tops with milk
18. Bake for 20 – 25 minutes or fry with vegetable oil until golden and puffed
19. Allow to cool on tray for 5 minutes
20. Serve hot with tomato sauce and enjoy with a chilled drink
